An Old Photo

March 11th, 2016

Miss Sylvia Mitchell, who was a musician at St John’s many years ago and now lives on the south coast, sent us this splendid photograph of then Rector Revd Charles Allingham with the junior choir in 1948 – we know it was that year because the chorister in the middle has a notice referring to Trinity Sunday being on June 20th, and that date was a Sunday in 1948. Remembering that there was a choir for older men and women too makes one realise how many people were involved in those days! The choir’s dress was changed from this very traditional style (ladies and girls wore blue, men and boys dark blue with white surplices) to the beige-coloured robes we now wear in the early 1970s.

Wow what a Gem of a photo. Great to take a look back at these and see how things have changed over the years.
